Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。本故事讲述了妮妮五岁的时候妈妈周玲以出国奔赴前程为名，抛下丈夫与女儿，从此渺无音讯。四年后，一系列的阴差阳错下，一家人再度相遇，此时丈夫才明白当初周玲因身患不治之症怕伤害其与女儿，原来她一直未曾离开，一直深爱着这个家庭……。在很久以后的未来，地面已经被污染到无法生存的程度，人类开始朝地底开发，并创造人工生命体代为劳动，没想到人工生命体反抗了人类接管了地底世界，而因为过度污染与新型态的病毒感染，原已所剩无几的人类又减损了近30%的人口，此时的人类以基因改造获得了长生，相对的也面对了自此失去生育能力的窘境，创造新生命成为人类世界复苏的关键。为了找寻失落的基因密码──“繁衍”，人类望向了曾经开发的地底世界开启了探索任务，同时因学生人数骤减而被舞蹈教室裁员的碰太，参加了地底任务的征选成为了被派往地底的英雄，只身前往充满未知恐惧的地底世界，惊人的地底探险就此开始……。
